Empire' season 3, episode 5 recap: Nothing is sacred for Lyons at war“Empire” exploded back onto on TV screens last night, Nov. Fox, in following its World Series hiatus. In episode five, “One Before Another,” Lucious (Terrence Howard) braces his family for a violent clap back from Shyne (Xzibit) after his attack. What dysfunctional Daddy Lyon soon realizes (and uses to his twisted advantage) is that Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) is harboring some hostilities toward Jamal (Jussie Smollett) and Andre (Trai Byers) that ignites a brotherly war. Meanwhile Angelo (Taye Diggs) stakes a claim for Cookie (Taraji P.

Henson) and Shyne seeks revenge in a covert collaboration with the enemy. Face Off and Stand Down. When “Empire” left us, we were gearing up for a guns- blazing, gang- war style retaliation from Shyne after being roughed up by Lucious and Andre. In last night’s follow- up, Lucious prepares for the worst and beefs up security across the family. But, nobody is watching Andre’s apartment, where Shyne bursts in, gun drawn, ready to shoot the oldest Lyon boy in the back post his hook- up with Nessa.

Thank God she intervenes and eventually talks Shyne down. Lucious arranges a sit down after Hakeem tells him he has to work with Shyne to make good music. They air their differences, street- style, and then surprise! Anika (Grace Byers) pops in and offers Shyne his own Empire imprint to persuade him to stand down. It works – or so we think, anyway. Brother vs. Brothers - Live. The series makes a great show in this episode of the ever- increasing importance and popularity of live- streaming in the music industry. Hakeem reluctantly agrees to livestream a performance with his middle brother from Jamal’s living room. Jamal sees it as an opportunity to perform without pressure and hopefully show his fans he’s still in the game. His half of the song is all love and light while Hakeem grabs a chance to drop the boom on Graham. Seriously? Shiver, cringe! What did Jamal do? When Hakeem goes for Andre it’s a full- on cussing, swearing, face- in- face brother vs. Empire Extreme numbers soar and Lucious couldn’t be happier. How sick is that? Cookie does her Mama Lyon thing and gets the whole thing shut down. It looks like nothing is sacred for this contentious clan.

What about brotherly love and Lyon family loyalty? Will Dre drop Nessa?

Will this set Jamal back from performing again? The Lyons have a ton of outside enemies. Can they possibly find a way to trust each other? Staking a Claim and Playing Dirty with the Devil A bright spot comes when Angelo (Taye Diggs) tries to work his hunky man magic with Cookie. He boldly stakes a claim for her by staving off her newly- stringent parole officer. He tells her he’s “a fighter” too. He’s willing to fight for her, against Lucious if necessary.

This guy is gorgeous and smart and powerful (in a good way). We’d love to see Cookie cut him a break! Can anyone ever stand a chance against Lucious, though? We’re guessing not, but, the ongoing Angelo- Cookie- Lucious love triangle is a welcome reprieve from “Empire’s” dark and dirty world.

Speaking of dirty, Shyne drops a hint to Tariq that Lucious may have had something to do with Freda’s father’s prison death. Uh oh. Lucious is dead wrong when he thinks Shyne isn’t a snitch. He's also forgetting a scorned man doesn't need a gun to take down an enemy. Has Lucious finally made a fatal judgment error? There are only three episodes left until the “Empire” fall finale and we can’t wait to see what happens next.
